Setup guide · macOS
Adding a Samsung printer to a Mac takes a few clicks. The only catch is that HP lists Mac drivers for older macOS only.
Quick answer
- FirstCheck the macOS versions HP lists for your model.
- Add itSystem Settings → Printers & Scanners → Add.
- Wi-FiJoin the printer to Wi-Fi before adding.
- DriverInstall HP’s driver when one is listed.
1. Check what HP lists for your Mac
HP stopped updating Samsung printer software for most models, so the newest macOS HP lists is often older than your Mac. The SCX-5737 page, for example, shows print and scan drivers for Mac OS X 10.4 to 10.10 and no print driver for newer macOS. Look up your model in our driver guides and read the macOS section first.
- HP lists a driver for your macOS: install it (step 4) and add the printer.
- HP lists nothing for your macOS: add the printer with the steps below. If it is not offered, see Samsung printer not working on Mac.
2. Connect the printer and add it
Apple lists these ways to add a printer. Open Apple menu → System Settings → Printers & Scanners → Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax, then:
- USB printer: connect it with a cable and switch it on. If your Mac has one USB-C port, use a multiport adapter.
- Wi-Fi or network printer: if the Mac and printer are on the same network, select the printer in the list and click Add.
- Not in the list: click the IP tab and enter the printer’s IP address or host name and the protocol. Apple says the printer must support AirPrint, HP Jetdirect (Socket), LPD or IPP.
Apple notes that printers added with these generic protocols may offer limited features. After switching the printer on, wait a minute or two before printing; some printers need that long to join the network.
3. Put the printer on Wi-Fi first
If the printer is not on your network yet, Apple says you may need to connect it to the Mac with a USB cable, install the software that came with it, and use its setup assistant to join the Wi-Fi network. After setup you can remove the cable.
HP lists Samsung Easy Wireless Setup for the Mac only for macOS 10.5 to 10.14. On a newer Mac, set up Wi-Fi from the printer’s own control panel instead.
4. Install HP’s driver when one is listed
- Download the Mac print driver from the link on your model page. The links go to HP’s own server.
- Open the downloaded file and run the installer.
- Add the printer as in step 2 and choose the Samsung driver in the Use list if it is offered.
- Print a test page from any app.
5. Scanning
Scanning on a Mac has its own steps. See how to scan from a Samsung printer on a Mac.
Common questions
Can I use an old Samsung driver on the newest macOS?
HP lists each driver only up to the macOS version shown on the model page. Newer versions are not covered, and the installer may fail.
Does my Samsung printer support AirPrint?
Only some models do. If an entry with AirPrint in its name appears when you add the printer, choose it.
Do I need a USB cable for a Wi-Fi printer?
Sometimes. Apple says you may need a USB cable once to set up Wi-Fi printing. Afterwards the cable can be removed.
