On HP’s page for the Samsung ProXpress SL-M4020, Not compatible toner cartridge means that the indicated cartridge is not suitable for the printer. HP’s advice there is to install a Samsung genuine cartridge. The same message appears on other Samsung laser models with slightly different wording. This is different from Toner low or Toner empty, which HP explains on separate pages.

For toner that is “not detected” or “install toner” messages, HP suggests reinstalling the cartridge two or three times to confirm it is seated properly. Turn the printer off, take the cartridge out, check the contacts for dirt or packing material, and push it in until it clicks.

Samsung used different cartridge codes across similar models, and some lookalike cartridges do not fit. Compare the code on your cartridge with HP’s toner compatibility chart on support.hp.com, and use the model name on the printer’s label. Our model pages help you confirm the exact model name.

HP has a page on how to confirm that you have genuine Samsung toner. It says toner without a CRUM chip is either starter toner or not genuine Samsung toner. HP also warns that refurbished or reconditioned toner is not guaranteed to work with your printer.

On HP’s community, a helper replying about a ProXpress C4060FX said the cartridge chip looked like one made for another region. HP’s documents for its own inkjet printers also say that errors can occur when a cartridge was made for a different country or region, and that HP Support can do a regionalization reset. We did not find a Samsung-specific procedure on HP’s pages, so ask HP before you try anything else.

HP’s advice when the problem persists is to contact HP customer support. Have the printer’s model name, the cartridge code and, if you moved to another country, that information ready. HP lists firmware files for Samsung printers on each model’s driver page, and our model pages show them. Update firmware only if you need it, and use the file for your exact variant.

HP’s guide for Samsung laser printers says these printers join only 2.4 GHz networks, and that they do not have 5 GHz capability. If your network does not appear when you set up the printer, check that your router or access point is broadcasting on 2.4 GHz. Some routers use one name for both bands; if the printer cannot join, try the router’s separate 2.4 GHz name.

Print a configuration report from the printer’s menu. The report shows the IP address and whether the printer is on your network. Your PC must be on the same network. Our older printer guide explains where to find the report.

If the router, network name or password changed, the printer cannot rejoin by itself. Users on the Samsung and HP forums say the fix was to reset the printer’s network settings and run the wireless setup again as if the printer were new.

1. Connect the printer to the PC with a USB cable.
2. Run Samsung Easy Wireless Setup. HP’s guide says this app is for a printer that is attached by USB.
3. Select your network, enter the password and follow the steps.
4. Unplug the USB cable and print a test page.

Other ways HP documents: use Samsung Easy Printer Manager in Advanced Mode (Device Settings and Network Settings tabs) while connected by USB, or Samsung Printer Diagnostics, which tries WPS first. On a Mac, Easy Wireless Setup is listed only for macOS 10.5 to 10.14; see Samsung printer not working on Mac.

These are Microsoft’s steps for Windows 11:

1. Turn the printer off, unplug it, wait 30 seconds, plug it in and turn it on.
2. Open Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners, select the printer and choose Set as default. If it is missing, turn off Let Windows manage my default printer first.
3. Select Open print queue, click the ellipsis (…) and choose Cancel all.
4. Restart the Print Spooler: search for Services, right-click Print Spooler, choose Restart.
5. If it is still offline, remove the printer, then choose Add device and add it again. Restart the PC.

On Windows 10, clear Pause Printing and Use Printer Offline in the printer’s queue window if either is checked.

A user on HP’s community reported a Samsung M2835DW that was online only after someone pressed a button on the printer. That points to the printer’s power-saving mode. Check the power-save setting in Samsung Easy Printer Manager or on the printer’s panel. You can also reserve the printer’s IP address in your router so it does not change; the menu name differs by router.

Samsung printer software now comes from HP, and HP stopped updating it for most models. For example, HP lists macOS 13 as the newest system for the Xpress SL-M2070 series, so macOS 14 and newer are not listed for it. Each model page on this site shows the macOS versions HP lists for that printer, and says clearly when HP lists only utilities and no print driver.

macOS prints to many network printers without a driver, using AirPrint. Apple says the printer must support AirPrint, HP Jetdirect (Socket), Line Printer Daemon (LPD) or Internet Printing Protocol (IPP).

1. Open the Apple menu → System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
2. Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
3. Select your Samsung printer. If an entry with AirPrint in the name is offered, choose it and print a test page.
4. If the printer is not listed, open the IP tab and enter its IP address and protocol. A printed configuration report shows the IP address.

Only some Samsung models offer AirPrint. HP’s community suggests trying it first when it appears, for example Samsung M2070 AirPrint.

If no Samsung driver is offered, choose a generic printer driver from the Use list when you add the printer. A generic PostScript or PCL driver works only if your printer understands that language. Then turn on Apple’s generic features:

1. In Printers & Scanners, select the printer and click Options & Supplies.
2. Check Use Generic Printer Features and click OK.

Add the printer a second time to create a new queue. When it prints correctly, delete the old queue. Apple also notes that some printers need a minute or two after power-on before they can print.

Apple recommends this only when other fixes have failed.

1. In Printers & Scanners, Control-click the list of printers.
2. Choose Reset Printing System and confirm.
3. Add your printers again (step 2).

HP lists Samsung Easy Wireless Setup for the Mac only for macOS 10.5 to 10.14. On a newer Mac, set up Wi-Fi from the printer’s own control panel, then add the printer as in step 2. More ideas are in Samsung printer offline or not connecting to Wi-Fi.

On a Samsung multifunction printer, printing and scanning use two different drivers. HP lists them as separate files, for example a Print Driver and a Scan Driver. Windows can install the print driver by itself, but the scan driver usually has to be installed on purpose. Print-only models (for example the SL-M3325) have no scanner at all.

HP’s guide says you must install Samsung Easy Printer Manager and Samsung Easy Document Creator before you can scan from the printer. You will also need the scan driver.

1. Find your model on our model pages or on HP’s Software and drivers page for your printer.
2. Choose Windows 11 (or your Windows version).
3. Download and install the scan driver, Easy Printer Manager and Easy Document Creator from the list.

Our model pages show which of these files HP lists for each Windows version, so you can see in advance whether a scan driver exists for Windows 11.

1. Open Samsung Easy Printer Manager from the taskbar and select your printer.
2. Choose the scan link under Quick Links. Easy Document Creator opens.
3. If no scanner name appears, click Search to find the connected scanner.
4. For several pages from the automatic feeder, choose ADF as the document source and save as PDF or multi-page TIFF.

According to HP, the Samsung Universal Scan Driver installs both TWAIN and WIA. This lets other scanning programs use your Samsung scanner without Easy Document Creator. If another program cannot see the scanner, install the Universal Scan Driver and restart the program.

For a printer on your network, make sure the PC and printer are on the same network and that scan to PC is enabled. The HP Community advice for a Samsung M2885FW that could not communicate with Windows 11 was to download the latest drivers for Windows 11 from HP, reinstall the software and check that scan to PC is enabled in the printer software.

HP’s scan guides for Samsung printers are older and do not mention Windows 11. The list for your model is what counts. If HP lists no scan driver for Windows 11, we cannot say whether an older driver will work. Users on HP’s forum report this for some models, for example the SCX-4623FN. Some users say they scan with a third-party program such as NAPS2 once the printer is connected. That is a user report, not a method HP supports.

Make sure the printer is on and shows no error on its display. For USB, try another cable or port. For a network printer, check that the printer and your PC are on the same network. Then try one test print from Notepad. If it still does not print, continue below.

A single failed job can block the queue. Microsoft lists this as the first fix.

1. Open Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
2. Select your Samsung printer and choose Open print queue.
3. Right-click each job and select Cancel until the queue is empty.

The Print Spooler is the Windows service that sends jobs to the printer. If it has crashed, nothing prints and apps may freeze when you press Ctrl + P.

1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc and press Enter.
2. Scroll to Print Spooler.
3. Right-click it and select Restart.

After a large Windows update, an old or duplicate driver can stop the printer from working. Users on the Windows Eleven Forum and in Samsung’s community describe exactly this with Samsung printers.

1. Select Start, type Device Manager and open it.
2. Expand Print queues (or Printers).
3. Uninstall any unneeded, old or duplicate Samsung printer entries.
4. Install the driver for your exact model. Samsung printer drivers now come from HP, and every model page on this site lists them by operating system.

1. Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners, select the printer and choose Remove. Confirm with Yes.
2. Make sure the printer is on and connected.
3. Select Add device and follow the prompts.
4. Restart the PC and print a test page.

Some older models have no Windows 11 driver on HP’s site. The printer may still work with a driver that Windows provides itself.
